North Korea fires multiple ballistic missiles into the sea after South Korea's hypersonic test

North Korea has conducted its fourth missile launch in October, according to DW News. The launch was described as a 'show of force' by South Korea's military in response to South Korea's successful test launch of a hypersonic missile.
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said various types of missiles were fired from the Pyongyang area, with one of them flying more than 900 kilometers before falling into the sea. Japan's coast guard also detected two objects that were fired from North Korea.
This latest missile launch adds to heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula, as both countries have been conducting weapons tests. South Korea's presidential office said that Pyongyang's repeated missile launches violate United Nations Security Council resolutions, urging an immediate stop.
A closer look
The missile tests come amid the backdrop of rising tensions over a North Korean landmine that exploded near the demilitarized zone (DMZ) last month, injuring three South Korean soldiers. A joint South Korean-UN investigation concluded that two landmines were planted by North Korean forces about a year ago.
North Korea has conducted numerous missile tests on more than 10 occasions this year, including four in October alone. Monday's test came after South Korean President Lee Jae Myung announced the rare test firing of a new hypersonic missile.
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff called North Korea's latest launch 'a show of force in response to the successful test launch of our hypersonic missile, as well as an intentional demonstration of missile capabilities.'
